INTRO
Late to the Party is an exhibition featuring the works of Langara Fine Arts graduates, friends emerging as a virtual collective in 2020, an exceptional year of exceptional events that include acts of resistance and resilience alongside compelled isolation. It is a year marked by pivots, where de-activated voices and spaces are re-activated in different forms with renewed determination and purpose. From painting to printmaking to digital media, from the figurative to the non-figurative, this exhibition examines a variety of concepts that include perceptions of identity, normative and transgressive conceptions of wellness, and coded aesthetics of subjectivity and ephemerality. The works also scrutinize notions of truth and untruth, explorations into differing forms of reality and changeability invoked through visual representations. The title of the exhibition gestures to the pivot from inaction to delayed but, nonetheless, consequential action.
